What is Hizbullah?

For the past couple of weeks Hizbullah and Israel have been exchanging fire across the Israel-Lebanon border. In 2006 the militia group went to war with Israel in response to Israel’s ground operation in Gaza. Now there’s speculation that it might do so again. What is Hizbullah, and how did they become an important force?
