The cost of having children

For some the prospect of coping with the cost and stress of parenthood is too great, even though children may bring enormous happiness (and a sense of purpose) to their parents. For governments, in many rich countries, concern about falling birth rates and ageing populations is also growing. How do potential parents decide if it is worth having children?
